vocal foundation

My personalised intro course allows us to work together to get an understanding of your voice and build, or refresh, a strong technical base removing any limitations in your singing. This program covers singing basics, blending sequenced concepts and tasks with personalised workshops, supported by outlines and an individualised plan.

Perfect for the complete beginner — who is probably really nervous, the seasoned singer — who’s not quite sure what they’re doing, or the gigging muso who just needs to know they’re using their voice well!

The Vocal Foundation is available as a 5-week standalone offering or a 4-week induction into Creative & Musical Coaching where we will continue to hone your skills with practical, immediately applicable methods.

  • Learning anything is an inherently vulnerable act. Learning singing (in particular) can feel extra exposing, and the idea of performing in front of others, especially a singing teacher, can be extremely anxiety inducing.

Having studied music for over 25 years and taught for over seven, I’ve seen firsthand how rewarding persevering through these barriers in a nurturing environment can be. This can create ripple effects of confidence and engagement in other areas of life too. I’ve experienced significant performance anxiety throughout my music career, as such it has become vitally important to me that my students feel safe, inspired and heard. My approach draws on techniques and tools from the breadth of my education and experimentation to break down and understand your unique experience of music and sound.

My passion lies in empowering and fostering independence in musicians of all levels by encouraging self-awareness and teaching technical music skills in engaging and effective ways. Every question (and sound) is welcome. I am confident that we will be able to achieve your musical goals, be they gaining confidence for late-night karaoke sessions or to the standard of professional industry performances.

  • My qualifications include an Advanced Diploma – Music Artist Industry, Certificate IV - Jazz Music, and Grade 5 ABRSM Theory. In 2020 I completed my fourth and final Honours year of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ Bachelor of Music (Contemporary) specialising in songwriting, music production, and vocal performance. Having recently graduated from a two-year Master of Arts Screen: Music at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in NSW, I am excited to be bringing even further industry expertise to my expanding teaching palette. Since graduating, I obtained a Certificate III in Small Business and Entrepreneurship and received business mentoring to develop systems for supporting adults learning music. Furthering my proficiency as a vocal coach, I completed both the VocaLab Advanced Vocal training and Vocal Educator's Toolkit in 2024 with speech pathologist and vocal specialist Elle Holiday, as well as the Jungle Alliance Coaching Certificate.

  • In your first lesson, after a quick chat to confirm your singing goals and an explanation of the first resources I'll send your way, I’d love to hear your voice.

Please bring a song you really enjoy and/or feel comfortable singing, we can play it off YouTube or Spotify (if you’re struggling to think of a song, I’ve compiled a playlist of suggested repertoire here).

Things to keep in mind if this is your first ever singing lesson (or fiftieth!):

    • Singing is a very vulnerable act. You can't just press a button and expect to produce the same note each time like you would a piano. However, there are ways we can establish consistency and confidence, and we're going to do it all together.

    • Even if you think you sound "bad," I am excited about figuring out whatever the sound your voice just made, tells us about the workings of your voice. Every sound is welcome, every question is welcome, and none of it means anything about who we are as people. If you're ever feeling particularly vulnerable or unsure about your voice, or something we're workshopping, please tell me. I've been there and it's my job to support you.

    • Singing is a practice that takes time and repetition, both conceptually and physically. We're going to strengthen your vocal muscles, your creative expression, aural skills and music knowledge - all whilst developing an embodied understanding of your voice. This will not happen overnight but it will happen, and I can't wait for you to feel what it's like to sing in a way you never imagined you could.

    • You are welcome to record any or all of your lessons, via filming or the voice memo app on your phone. This is a practice that has helped me feel comfortable just "doing" in my lessons over the years, knowing I can integrate what I learnt when I'm watching or listening back.
